AS9100D is a company level certification based on a standard published by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) titled "Quality Management Systems - Requirements for Aviation, Space and Defense Organizations".
This certification is for organizations doing business in the aerospace industry such as manufacturers, contractors, and suppliers.
The requirements in this standard are not an alternative to customer/applicable statutory or regulatory requirements. In cases of conflict, the customer/applicable statutory or regulatory requirements will take priority.
Certifications are issued by third party certifying bodies.
For an organization to maintain AS9100D certification, they will be subjected to annual or regularly scheduled audits where the organization's compliance with the standard is evaluated by the certifying body.
There are many thousands of certification bodies around the world; accredited and non-accredited.
Many non-accredited certification bodies are considered private (no oversight) and these companies are often referred to as certification mills.
